What I like

I love this Sirius lamp for the beauty of the transparent, heavy, thick crystal, which traps the light, and this superb plant frieze worked with pliers by the master glassmaker: all the examples are therefore different.

A simple shape, the egg, is magnified by the heel which lifts it from the support and the small narrow collar which is so simply elegant. The powerful frieze reminds me of a powerful organ chord: a very strong, dynamic element.

With a straight round section lampshade, the crystal will reflect the light and bring all its precious simplicity to an interior.

I like the fact that this lamp base is the archetype of Michel Daum’s creations in the 50s: certainly, some prints were colored in the mass, but I think it is colorless that the Daum crystal really stands out: Daum creations were immediately copied, never equaled, by the other major French crystal houses.

Sirius model lamp base in clear crystal, ovoid in shape, a large and powerful frieze worked with stylized foliage adorns the lower part, resting on a straight heel, narrow neck welcoming the socket and its stem.

The Sirius model was created by Michel Daum in 1952 (see a Sirius model cup reproduced in Daum The 50s, by François Duret-Robert, Les éditions de l’amateur, page 153). Note that the Sirius model is quite close to a Sorcy model cup reproduced in the same work, page 134-135, the frieze being a little lower.

This Sirius crystal lamp base is both simple and very sophisticated: the light is magnified, almost mystical! Its elegant shape, its material, colorless but reflecting the rays of the sun and the light bulb allow it to win over all interiors: you will never make a mistake in taste!

I can see it illuminating old paintings or drawings, placed on an inlaid chest of drawers or, on the contrary, on a gilded wood console: it is a collector’s art object!

But it will also coexist with our most demanding paintings, such as the Geometric Composition by Edgard Pillet, dating from the same years, the Geometric Composition also by Lenine Lima de Medeiros from 1971; but its elegance allows it to live in good harmony with Africo #1 by Enrico Cervelli in the bronze range, but also, more unexpectedly, with the Papillon de Nuit 1976 horsehide tapestry by Pierre Szekely!

As for modern furniture, it can adorn the coffee table by Julian de Covemaeker from the 1950s, with its interesting abstract black and gold decor, the bar table by Domustil in steel and smoked glass… Of course, it will live very well with the armchairs from his time, such as the G10 by Pierre Guariche, or the Steiner fireside chair and ottoman set, with its original cover!

The designer

Michel Daum (1900-1986), a chemical engineer, ran the Daum crystal factory with Henri Daum from the 1950s and became its President in 1965. Member of the Committee of Decorative Artists, he is at the origin of the production of pieces in clear crystal, very symptomatic of the 1950s-1970s. Daum’s creations will often be imitated, never equaled: the crystal is alive, stretching into supple undulations worked with pliers.

The editor

Daum is a crystal factory founded in 1878 in Nancy, Lorraine, France, by Jean Daum. The development of Daum took place around 1890-1900 with the Art Nouveau style and the Nancy School (see Gallé…). Creations from this period populate museums, both in France and in Japan, in the United States and in Japan in particular. The Daum workshops trained some of the big names in Art Nouveau: Jacques Gruber, Amalric Walter, the Schneider brothers…Masterpieces were also created during the Art Deco period, also in major museums. After the Second World War and the numerous shortages of pigments used to make glass paste, crystal took a predominant place, under the direction of Henri and Michel Daum. A grandson of the founders developed the manufacture of a particularly transparent and brilliant crystal. This new crystal favors the production of pieces with thick and flexible shapes, with a luminous appearance. This new style was quickly copied by all the manufacturers, but rarely has the accuracy of the design been associated with such a luminous crystal.
