What I like

I like these low chairs for their extremely simple pop design, a light metal and plastic structure, with these large and very comfortable cushions.

I like the fact that they are completely 1970, with their low seat, the use of plastic, hitherto not used for furniture, and their color so typical of the pop years with this iconic orange.

This pair of low chairs is unpretentious, challenges the paradigm of elitist armchairs, to slip into the footsteps of the Union of Modern Artists: how to make beauty accessible to all, that its price allows to change: finally, we buy for oneself, without necessarily thinking about one’s succession: one lives hic et nunc!

Technical description

Pair of pop low chairs newly  covered with an  orange washable herringbone fabric, composed of a white lacquered metal structure forming a rectangular seat with metal wires and springs, supported at the corners by L-shaped legs in white plastic, and small straight backrest, the cushions padded with 36 buttons, covered with the same fabric, that of the seat rectangular, that of the backrest with trapeze-section.

Around 1970.

Small covers and gaps in the lacquer.

Mix & Match

Of course, these pop low chairs are a strong signal in a room, more by their colorful fabric than by their size. But if we place them near a fireplace, we can very well in the background have some old furniture, mainly made of natural wood.

But of course, they will be very happy to share the spotlight with other modern and contemporary furniture! The Sling bench from Knoll will bring another shade of orange, the Adirondack armchairs from Philippe Parent will play with the unexpected combination of orange and green! And of course, Gae Aulenti’s Orsay salon will bring its virginal freshness!

On the wall, their very special color will make the brass inlays of the Composicion metallica tapestry by Enrico Broglia from the same 1970s sparkle. Bernard Tulula  Composition will use orange again, combining it with blue!

I would very much like to put my orange fireside chairs in front of the large sculpture, Colonnes, 1966 by Guillaume Leunens: they will awaken these three columns of matt metal.

The designers

I have not found the designer of these pop chairs, but he is sure that he understood very well the revolution in the way of sitting, with the very low seat, and in the way of conceiving the purchase of a piece of furniture: no more expensive furniture that we keep for life: long live simple, contemporary materials (plastic): the shape is extremely simple, count the joy provided by the color so typical of the 1970s. Yes 1968 has been there !!

The editor

These low chairs may have been produced in many copies because the technology is simple and cheap. However, as they are innovative, they may have been shunned by the public.
