Painting on silk « Composition » from Sarah Stein

What I like

I like the fact that it is a real work of art by a rare artist in France, most of her studio fund having been sold in June 2015 at Anticthermal in Nancy. The known works are of a rigorous abstraction. I particularly like in the work presented the softness brought by the rare technique of painting on silk. The very geometric character is counterbalanced by the subtlety of the palette, with its very light blue-gray, its various grays, awakened by the yellow and red accents.

So I like this distinguished restraint that tempers the rigor of the motif and gives it a subtle poetry.

Sarah Stein’s works probably date from the 40s to the 70s, according to the indications on the signed works.

Some have made the link between this Sarah Stein and Sarah Stein (1870-1953), wife of Michael Stein, himself brother of Gertrud Stein: this couple collected and encouraged Matisse enormously; Sarah Stein determined him to open the Académie Matisse and was also a painter. In the absence of further details, we will not make that leap.

Mix & Match

This is a work of art: presenting it is an affirmation of its own taste, which transcends any decoration. As a result, you can have a painting by Sarah Stein on the wall with classical furniture of the seventeenth, eighteenth or nineteenth centuries: it is better to hang other modern works on the picture rails! But of course, this abstract painting will marry perfectly with all the furniture creations of the century from the 1930s onwards. He will happily look at the waxed oak of the Danish salon  of the 1960s  of Borge Jensen and  Sonner, will illuminate  the table “André” of Tobia and Afra Scarpa, or the coffee table with abstract decoration of Julien de Covemaeker known as Belarti. But we can dare to confront it with a bright red such as that of the red  and white Space Age swivel chairs. All choices are allowed!

The creator

A studio background sold in June 2015 at Anticthermal in Nancy highlighted Sarah Stein’s abstract work: the indications of galleries on the back of the works were French but also Anglo-Saxon, which may augur an English or American origin. The work we are presenting, unsigned, was part of this set.

Sarah Stein’s works probably date from the 40s to the 70s, according to the indications on the signed works.
