What I like
This coffee table is quite discreet, yet adds a warm, elegant touch. What I appreciate about this table is its original diamond-shaped base, very decorative despite its understated elegance.
The care taken in the design of this base is particularly noticeable in the small, gracefully angled scrolls at the ends of the glides.
Furthermore, the La Roue tile top is very inviting. The square tiles are all different, with stylized decorations of flowers, crosses, flowers and circles in a warm range of orange and gold tones, which greatly brightens this large tabletop.
I love the work of this workshop, which was very active in Vallauris in the 1960s. It evokes the summer of the South: you can hear the crickets!
Moreover, its size makes it very practical for displaying statues, vases, and of course, glass vases and bottles!
Technical description
Atelier La Roue in Vallauris
Round coffee table, the wrought iron base forming a circle around the ceramic tiles decorated with crosses, flowers, and circles, in shades of orange or brown, resting on a diamond-shaped plinth supported by four angled feet ending in small scrolls.
Circa 1960.
The attribution to the Atelier La Roue is based on the purchase of individual tiles, signed on the reverse, which I installed as a backsplash in my kitchen.

Mix & Match
I would love to surround this very 1960s table with the pair of Pierre Guariche G10 armchairs, so typical of the era, which also have those armrests with oblique lines. Of course, the stark brown leather and blackened wood of Sonja Wasser’s Grasshopper armchairs could contrast beautifully with the warmer curves of the table.
It would be fun to surround our table with the sofa and armchairs attributed to Carl Eric Klote for Overman: their orange upholstery and rounded shape would be a perfect match!
On this table, I would place either one of our Daum clear crystal vases, or the Daum clear crystal Buddha statue by Roy Adzak. Or perhaps the interesting brown marble sculpture by Jean Podvin, or even the large beige stoneware lamp by Dijkstra Kalen, or the Altuglas and chrome lamp by Feliceantonio Botta. It would also be fun to showcase Martha Boto’s kinetic sculpture “Dynamochromatic 1969.”
On one wall, I would display Joseph André Motte’s “Eyes” sideboard, the mahogany warmly complementing the oranges of La Roue’s coffee table, in front of Enrique Broglio’s brown and gold tapestry “Composicion Metallica” or Pierre Szekely’s incised horsehide “Nocturnal Butterfly.”

The designer and editor
The designer is unknown. A similar example with a base has been attributed to Roche Bobois. Maybe is it a creation of La Roue workshop and gallery.
The ceramist
The tiles are therefore the same as those from the La Roue workshop in Vallauris that I bought unmounted, which were signed on the back. The La Roue workshop, founded in 1962 by Alexandre and Betty Fadas in Vallauris, was one of the most important workshops. The workshop is part of the post-war Vallauris ceramic tradition, renowned for the quality and originality of its products.
