SOLD – Large desk from the Banque de France, circa 1965
Description
What I like
I like this very large desk which is at the same time made very warm by the softness of its walnut veneer with well-chosen veins. This large desk surprises with its lightness created by the opposition between the straight and chrome uprights and the oval design of the two side boxes. The design of this piece of furniture thus combining the straight line and the curve, in a subtle balance, is the result of a certain French classicism and a modern taste, seeking purity, thanks to the thin uprights that the use allows. metal. The trichromy: chrome, black lacquer and walnut veneer, reveals the refinement of its design and its production. I like this desk which, through the use of metal and wood, corresponds well to the great creations of the 1960s and 1970s.
I like the quality of its design and its realization, attested by its order by the Banque de France, for its leaders. Representatives of the state, the latter were furnished with great attention to quality and integration into the latest designer trends.

Mix & Match
This large office could certainly have as an office chair that EA 117 of the Eames or that of Pollock, published by Knoll. The use of metal combined with leather will take up the codes of the office. But why not suddenly have an Empire desk chair in mahogany, with lion protomes or Egyptian heads: the desk is balanced enough to accept the challenge.
To receive visitors, what could be better than installing them in the famous G10 armchairs by Pierre Guariche for Airborne? The rigor of their design compensated by the color of their woolen cloth in no way affects their comfort.
On this large desk, I would place the Pyramid lamp by A. Tonello and A. Montagna Grillo: as a common thread, chromed metal. But I would bring masculine elegance with the “Warrior” statue in green crystal paste created by Maurice Legendre for Daum. Unless I prefer the polychromy of Fernand Rolland’s Painted Wood Composition, so dynamic!
On the walls, two choices: either his remains in the muted but shimmering harmonies of walnut, with the cut-out gouache “Vers la joie” by Paul Shusaku Foujino, or else with “Africano N1 – 1961” by Enrico Cervelli; or we launch into a colorful contrast with the “Nuit d’Espagne” tapestry by Daniel de Linière or the “Composition” by Edgard Pillet, so modern given its date of creation, 1950/1951!

The designer
Unfortunately, the inventories of the Banque de France have not kept any trace of the order from this office. The design of this piece of furniture is nevertheless very balanced: classicism and modernity are harmoniously mixed; the designer looked at the great achievements of the time, but wanted this piece of furniture to have a strong presence, commensurate with the functions of the banker who was to use it. We are far from the minimalism of some of Florence Knoll’s creations, with such straight shapes. The rigor of the great civil service has been softened, magnified.
