Jewel clock in gilded metal and blue glass plates, signed SCHMID-SCHLENKER, West Germany, circa 1970
Description
What I like
I love this astonishing jewel clock for the quality of its gilding combined with its blue enamel and its glass plates, which are very beautiful.
The extremely innovative shape of this cylindrical case cantilevered by this entirely double lateral structure, this rich decoration of plates, either gold or blue glass, all this creates a sort of offbeat jewel. I like the fact that it takes up the codes then developed by jewelry, as we see in certain creations by Jean Schlumberger, Chopard in their watches with hard stone dials, Van Cleef & Arpels…
I also like that the movement is mechanical and of good quality, having a power reserve of 8 days and a chime that will brighten up the house.
I like the fact that this clock will give a refined spirit and very linked to the high decoration of the 1970s, classic overall in its materials but so innovative in its structure and its decor!

Mix & Match
This clock gives a refined side to all the interiors in which it will live. On a Louis XVI period desk, but also on our large walnut and chrome desk from the 1960s, from the Banque de France, its gold and blue duotone will bring sparkles of light to the wood!
We can more classically place our large console in white lacquered metal and glass top from the 70s and 80s, or in a bedroom on a coffee table: why not the table by Julien de Covemaeker with a ceramic top with an abstract bronze decoration? Or the sculpture table forming a bar from Acerbis?
There is no doubt that its golden shards will respond wonderfully to the beautiful “Composition metallica” tapestry in wool and brass by Enrique Broglia.
The opposition of its very ornate side to the purity of the G10 armchairs by Pierre Guariche can also be interesting.
In fact, it is an object that is sufficient in itself: as a result, it is ready to coexist with all the furniture, objects and paintings, as long as they have a strong personality, like him!

The designer
In 1971, the Schmid Schlenker company had a research workshop very at the forefront of fashion, which designed a certain number of jewelry clocks of models close to ours, and also Space Age clocks with plexiglass cabinets. The series of these ambient clocks were called “current structure”.
The editor
Schmid-Schlenker
German clock and watch manufacturer
The company W. & A. Schmid-Schlenker was founded in 1934 by brothers Albert Schmid (technical director) and Walter Schmid (commercial director) and began producing Black Forest table clocks in the watchmaking town from Schwenningen am Neckar.
Thanks to the development of their own painting and gilding technology for watch cases, they quickly turned to the production of so-called Sumiswälder or Neuchâtel clocks. These were sold in Switzerland under the brand “Du Château”, where the watch brand “Le Castel” already existed and produced Neuchâtel clocks. The Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Germany were also important sales markets for this type of watch. During the war, production had to stop. Due to the complete dismantling after the war, production could only resume in 1948. In order to expand production, the company was moved in 1952 to a newly constructed company building in Bad Dürrheim, Schwenninger Str.
From this moment, a stormy development began, including the production of “antique clocks” in 1955, annual clocks and miniature annual clocks, carriage clocks, heavy clocks in solid brass with their own mechanical movement with half-hour strikes and mercury compensation.
Schmid-Schlenker reached its largest workforce with 250 employees at the end of the 1950s. Through increased sales efforts in foreign markets, an export share of 65 to 70 percent was achieved in the 1970s. one of the most important export markets at that time was England. The number of employees at that time was 100. From 1971, the company began manufacturing room decoration clocks of the “current structure” series. In 1978, Peter Schmid, a business graduate and son of Walter Schmid, took over the management of the family business with 11 shareholders and was renamed Schmid-Schlenker GmbH & Co.KG. After the triumph of quartz movements in the late 1970s, production of large clocks in Germany increasingly shifted to low-wage Asian countries. The decline of the German watch industry begins. Schmid-Schlenker must have also experienced this development; the company was active until around 1990.
A beautiful and authentic clock at a fair price
Our clock has been carefully selected for its aesthetic qualities, its originality and its fair price. Our choice favors above all the acuity of the design, linked to this particular series “current structure” and the quality of manufacturing, of which the signature of Schmid Schlenker is guarantor, guarantee of an enhancement of your new acquisition in your interior and of an ability to dialogue with your furniture, to match and mix to create a unique decoration.
Buying vintage art objects is surely a reasonable investment, such is the appetite for the 1987s.
Finally, buying vintage art objects preserves the resources of planet Earth.
