“Cylinders” coffee table in chromed metal, Italy, circa 1970
Description
What I like
I like the original base of this coffee table, whose chromed metal reflects light and images to infinity. I like the rhythm of this sculpture whose cylinders are different but arranged in a cross: it looks like a futuristic skyline! The impression is very different, almost psychedelic!
The very architectural aspect of the base gives the impression of a shimmering chrome sculpture, very complex although its X structure is a simple cross. The high-performance suction cup system guarantees the stability of the glass top, which is important especially when you have children or animals. This playful creation is very typical of the 1970s, well made and will fit into both designer and classic interiors, becoming a work of art sculpture.
In addition, it has a perfect size, accommodating a lamp and a sculpture, at the end of a chic sofa. It sneaks into smaller spaces and its reflections make it an object where space expands!
The marriage of chrome and glass, already known in the 1930s, returned as a gimmick in force in the 1960s and 1970s.

Mix & Match
This coffee table is a sculpture, a work of art, in perfect harmony between chrome and glass. Because of the intelligence of its design, it is an element that has its own autonomy, which has its own identity, strong enough to marry with any furniture and works of art whatsoever.
Of course, it can be mixed in the classic way with other creations from the 1970s or 1960s: I would gladly place it in front of the Grass Hoper armchairs by Sonja Wasseur or in front of the pair of pop orange fireside chairs whose large rounded cushions will take up the curves of the cylinders.
I may add a sculpture of modest size such as that of Jean Podevin in marble with abstract decoration, or that in polychrome wood by Fernand Rolland.
As always when the design and manufacture are of high quality, they can also be associated with creations from previous centuries: why not with a pair of Directoire armchairs: the openwork sheaf of the backrests is reflected in the rounded chrome of the cylinders of the base.
This sculpture coffee table lives well in confrontation with a canvas representative of Geometric Abstraction, such as the Composition by Edgard Pillet that we are presenting, or the diptych “Invocation” and “Water and Dreams” by Charles Piquois, more dreamlike, but also with a beautiful Caravaggesque painting: your favorite paintings will love living with it.

To know more
The designer
The creator, unknown, plays with the codes of the 70s: the glass-chrome combination is brought to its acme by the cruciform shape of the base and the reflections on the chrome cylinders dematerialize this base. The various types of cylinders used intriguingly punctuate this table, and make it a sculpture.
The editor
This coffee table is well made: the editor, unknown, did not skimp on the quality of the chrome and the heaviness of the table is a guarantee of quality.
