Daum, crystal lamp with plexiglass lampshade, around 1960/1970 lampe en cristal à abat-jour en plexiglas, vers 1960/1970
Description
What I like
What I love about this very special lamp is its strongly marked 1960s/1970s style: the renowned Daum house decided to make it a true style statement, combining a very sleek clear crystal base with a rare oval lampshade made of 4 curved plexiglass panels, either translucent white or silver. This combination was also used with a few other rare lampshade shapes.
I love the simplicity of the lamp base, with its drop or pear shape, accentuated by grooves and sharp angles: it almost looks like a giant perfume bottle or a precious cognac bottle!
Pairing this lampshade with such an innovative material is a brilliant idea: the lamp is immediately recognizable by the clear crystal interacting with the light, and you are at the forefront of style thanks to this lampshade!
What I also really like is the elliptical shape of the original lampshade that has been preserved, which describes the revolution of a planet around a star: we stay in astronomy!

Mix & Match
Certainly, it is a 20th-century antique, dating from the 1960s/70s, but above all, it is a statement lamp, combining what made the Daum house famous—the work with colorless crystal—with the most cutting-edge innovation in the material and shape of the lampshade! It should be seen as a rare work of art, but one that, due to its perfection and palette, will fit absolutely anywhere!
The rigor of its design, combined with its poetry, will recall the angles and curves of Philippe Parent’s Adirondack chairs: the same delicacy characterizes them; the lines of Sonja Wasseur’s Grass Hopper pair of chairs will also resonate with it brilliantly!
Of course, this lamp will converse with a wide variety of paintings, bringing their cheerfulness, their magical, otherworldly qualities, their volumetric presence: I am thinking in particular of the work of Edgard Pillet, whose rigor will become poetic, but also of Enrico Cervelli’s gouache “Africano Uno” from 1961, whose status as an ochre icon will radiate through the crystal of our lamp and its lampshade. Its elegant design will play with the curves of Naum Knop’s “Adam and Eve,” and the warmth of the exotic wood in this sculpture will interact with the light captured in the crystal of our lamp base, as well as with the translucent, silvery aspect of the lampshade! Finally, one can certainly consider it typical of the 60s or 70s, but one can also label it as a precious antique and place it on a Louis XV marquetry dresser, or view it as a contemporary sculpture and introduce it into the apartment of a contemporary art collector!

The designer
Michel Daum (1900-1986), a chemical engineer, ran the Daum crystal works with Henri Daum starting in the 1950s and became its President in 1965. A member of the Committee of Decorative Artists, he initiated the production of clear crystal pieces and, in rare cases, slightly colored ones, which are very characteristic of the 1950s-1970s. Daum’s creations were often imitated but never matched. In our lamp, the crystal is paired by the design office with this lampshade, innovative in both its material and shape, for a limited production.
The editor
Daum is a crystal manufacturer founded in 1878 in Nancy, Lorraine, France, by Jean Daum. Daum’s development took place around 1890-1900 with the Art Nouveau style and the Nancy School (cf. Gallé…). The creations from this period are featured in museums in France, as well as Japan, the United States, and particularly Japan. The Daum workshops trained some of the great names of Art Nouveau: Jacques Gruber, Amalric Walter, the Schneider brothers… Masterpieces were also created during the Art Deco period, also found in major museums. After World War II and the numerous shortages of pigments used to make glass paste, crystal became predominant under the direction of Henri and Michel Daum. A grandson of the founders developed a particularly transparent and brilliant crystal. This new crystal enabled the production of pieces with thick and flexible shapes that have a luminous appearance.

Buying a vintage lamp is certainly a reasonable investment, given the strong appeal of the 1960s/1970s and the continued interest in pairs in interior design.
Finally, buying a vintage piece helps preserve the planet’s resources.
