Jean ZORKO (1937-2023), Torso, white marble
Description
What I like
I like this Jean Zorko’s Torso-1975 because of its shape, which recalls certain works by Jean Arp, the superb polish and patina of white marble, hollowed out, that we wish to caress, around which the eye wanders, discovering at each moment a new work. I like his size, large without being intrusive: often Zorko has created monumental works, sometimes in public spaces.
I admire the journey of this foreign sculptor, a professor at the Sorbonne, who succeeded in being awarded the Leopold Sédar Senghor Prize in 2012.
These pieces are fluid, elegant, with curves punctuated by hems specifying a shape.

Mix & Match
This beautiful sculpture, you want to caress it: also, would it be better to place it on a table, solid because of its heavy weight, with a wooden or stone top, avoiding glass, or better on a dedicated harness?
It is pleasant to be able to contemplate it from all sides, from the face of the chest, so powerful, up to the stylized buttocks.
So, I would like to put it on the table Orsay by Gae Aulenti, with its off-white top, or rather on the German coffee table with its orange ceramic top: these two tables are from the same years of creation as the sculpture! On the walls, his curves will take up those of Edgar Pillet’s work, from 20 years earlier, or better that of Lenine de Lima Medeiros from 1971.
Its polished white marble could match the gray metal so worked in Colonnes-1961 by Guillaume Leunens, but also the anthropomorphic brown-beige marble of Jean Podvin, from the 70s.
The Torso-1975 by Zorko will dialogue with our many Daum vases, playing the opacity of marble against the transparency of crystal.
