STEINER-Paris- Lounge chair and its ottoman, circa 1950/1960
Description
What I like
I like this set for its rare and refined side: first of all the design of the lounge chair, minimalist, with the nice refinement of the lateral line, the detail of the two cushions of the backrest slightly different size to support the lumbar, and this cross-head support juxtaposed above! on the other hand, I like the beauty of the feet: the hexagonal section of the feet of the lounge chair plays with the important spheres of its wheels and the feet of the ottoman, so simple, are magnified by these wide pastilles…
This rigour (the straight lines of the carcasses and feet) combined with a certain fantasy (the rounding of the cushions, pads of the ottoman and the wheels of the seats) made me think of Steiner’s best achievements, designed by the Atelier de Recherche Plastique, Pierre Guariche, Michel Mortier and Joseph André Motte!
On the other hand, I like the great comfort provided by the 3 cushions of the back of the seat, the possibility to maneuver with the wheels and the comforting presence of the ottoman where you can stretch your legs!
I love their vintage coating, with this curious detail of the buttoned cord on the seat of the coachwoman, their very simple but folly elegant line, typical of the time of their creation.
Finally, their creativity and the quality of their manufacture are the mark of Steiner, this great house that has known how to wear high the colors of French design

Mix & Match
This lounge chair and its ottoman have lines both straight and strict (the carcasses of the chair and the ottoman) and round and poetic (the sections of the cushions, wheels and pads feet).
In addition, they are brightened by the gilding of the wheels and feet with lozenges, refined detail.
As a result, they can be associated with the geometric shapes of Pierre Guariche’s G10 chairs for Airborne, but also with the orthogonal lines of Sonja Wasseur in her Grasshopper chairs: their rounded details will play with the light curves of Gae Aulenti’s Orsay ensemble.
Which coffee table to choose? Of course, the preciousness of the gilded table of Julien de Covemaeker will do wonders, which also takes up the black and gold of our set’s feet.
We can also use the bar table by Lodovico Acerbis, which combines cylinders and straight lines.
This chair and its ottoman can be used to promote the Geometric composition- 1950/1951 of Edgard Pillet, earlier a few years. But what about presenting our set in front of the tapestry of Daniel de Linière Vent d’été, with a beige mastic background and very colorful motifs, typical of the 60s!
Finally, the composition of Michiel Gloeckner Aquarius #4 from 1973 will bring its precious colorful palette and calm.

The designer
For the moment, these chairs are attributed to the internal style office of Steiner; nevertheless, there is no doubt that the beauty of their lateral line does not recall the creations of Mortier, Motte and Guariche in particular the model Teckel!
The editor
Essential actor of high-end design furniture, Steiner- Paris was born in 1926.
1894. Charles Steiner was born in Bucharest, Romania.
The 1920s, Paris. Charles, a Romanian Jew, emigrates to Paris, no doubt encouraged by the Franco-Romanian relations established in the 1920s as part of the Petite Entente. He opened a workshop in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine. His specialty: the manufacture of seats.
1926. Production of his first known work: a club chair in studded leather inspired by the Art Deco style and the Anglo-Saxon allure that remains until the 30s the bulk of his production.
1936. Charles Steiner buys a mothproof seat trim from Wilhem Knoll. On this occasion, the German industrialist introduces his nephew, a young and talented furniture designer: Étienne-Henri Martin, whom he will take under his wing.
1937. From this meeting a new line of seats was born: Super-Knoll whose frame is made of beech wood, the velvet cover and the reclining backrest. With this well-designed and comfortable range, Charles Steiner becomes the first manufacturer of seats in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine to engage in a modern policy accessible to the greatest number.
1948. Death of Charles Steiner. Hugues Steiner, with an artistic as well as commercial sense, took over the reins of the family business in the same year. With this new leader, Steiner takes the turn of modernity, inspired by Scandinavian design.
1949. He adopted and commercialized the process of the industrialist René Mélin: a support for seat and back formed by small springs stretched in star, called Free-Span which replaced the traditional padding with straps and spiral springs during the 50s. This system brings comfort to the seat while reducing the footprint, perfectly responding to the post-war aesthetic of lightness and flexibility. With their removable cushions and innovative suspension, the Bow Wood chairs by Hugues Steiner, which use the technique of steam-bent wood, conquer the hearts of the public.
1951-54. Hugues Steiner meets Pierre Guariche, a leading figure among young designers and series designers. With him, he will sign several design icons: the superb tripod coffee table Bow Wood Steiner, the armchair Bow Wood, quickly followed by the series Tonneau with models such as chairs Tulipe, Amsterdam composed of a wooden shell placed on a discreet metal base.
1954. An important date for production: it is the birth of the Atelier de Recherche Plastique (ARP) by Pierre Guariche, Michel Mortier and Joseph-André Motte. With luminarist Pierre Disderot and storage manufacturer Charles Minvielle, Hugues Steiner develops joint advertising and distribution networks. The Steiner establishments are equipped with a design office, a research engineer and a director of planning and production control and the plant in Villeneuve Saint-Georges is enlarged and equipped with new technologies.
1955-1964. France lives in the heart of the Thirty Glorious. By choosing the best elements of the time Pierre Guariche, Joseph-André Motte, Michel Mortier and René-Jean Caillette, Hugues Steiner gives the art of the seat a breath of ultra creative functionality, always in the air of the time. The Vampire armchair by Pierre Guariche, the 740 or 800 sofa by Joseph-André Motte, the Diamant chair by René-Jean Caillette, the SF 103 seat or the M4 suspension by Michel Mortier and many other furniture models with clean lines, Colourful and bold have become cult and reissued today
1965-69. Faced with the wave of design boosted by new techniques and new materials (including plastic), Hugues Steiner maintains his rank. He built a state-of-the-art factory in Noisy-le-Grand and went out looking for new talent. Among them, Claude Courtecuisse, Pascal Mourgue and especially the Chinese Kwok Hoï Chan. In 1969, the latter signed the mythical Zen (armchair with structural line), Pen Club (armchair and sofa with elegant metal structure) and Limande (low and very wide armchair).
1970. The highlight of French design, Kwok Hoï Chan stands out once again with a modular creation hyper colorful: Chromatique. That same year, Hugues Steiner called on the designer Yves Christin to head his research centre. Many young people enter the workshop. Among them, Sylvain Joly who collaborated with Hugues Steiner on the design of the Swany sofa, composed of modular seats in a very fashionable immaculate white, which has become the favourite furniture of some personalities. At this time, Hugues Steiner also created the Steel Line, a set of seats in highly elegant and highly publicized chrome tube as well as several sofas: Yogi, Oasis, Anturium and especially Théo, which inspired Pierre Cardin. The Mini Club range, whose elements are removable and transportable in a suitcase designed for this purpose, is also born.
1971. Kwok Hoï Chan releases the Boxer armchair, light and padded.
1977-79. The great couturier Pierre Cardin opens the Evolution gallery on rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honoré and launches the creation and distribution of furniture «looking to the future». He calls on the Steiner company to realize these new ranges: essentially sets composed of padded or cushioned foam or molletonnées with triangular shapes (Pleyel), elliptical (Coupole), pyramidal (Vendôme)…
1980. Steiner specializes in comfortable multi-position furniture such as the three-position Carelia. Signed by Yves Christin, she is followed by Athéna, amazing model to sit and stretch several times award. Other seats like the Racing, Zénith, Targa, Élysée, Athéna sofas, all signed by Yves Christin will follow. Hugues Steiner signs the sofa beds and heating units Delta. But the company is hit by the crisis that affects the entire furniture sector and Hugues Steiner, who will have participated fully in the adventure of design, decides to sell.
1988-2004. He sold his company to Cauval Industries (now Adova) which opted for a more formal and consensual style.
2004. The brand diversifies and launches a complete collection of carpets, lighting, coffee tables…
2006-2019. Steiner calls on the Italian architects Maurizio Manzoni and Roberto Tapinassi of Memo Studio to create new products. Among them, the sofas Redquoia (2011), Odéon (2012), Tiama (2018) and Tinéo (2019).
2020 to today. The French group Market Maker acquires the Steiner brand, with the desire to keep the high-quality know-how that is in the company’s DNA and to republish some models that have made the brand famous.
